DJI Matrice 4T vs Matrice 4TD: Which Thermal Drone to Buy
The Matrice 4T and 4TD share the same airframe and thermal payload, but they solve different problems. The 4T is a pilot-flown enterprise workhorse; the 4TD is the dock-native, autonomous variant designed to fly missions without a human on site.
The short answer
- Choose the Matrice 4T if you have a qualified crew flying inspection, SAR, public safety or survey jobs across multiple sites.
- Choose the Matrice 4TD with Dock 3 if you need scheduled, remote, autonomous thermal missions — solar farms, substations, perimeter security, industrial sites — with minimal on-site staffing.

When the Matrice 4T is the right call
- You already have a pilot / observer team and travel to jobs.
- You need one airframe that flies mapping, thermal inspection and rooftop / façade work.
- Budget is capex on a single airframe rather than a fixed dock installation.
When the Matrice 4TD + Dock 3 is the right call
- You have a fixed site (solar, substation, port, plant, perimeter) that needs repeat coverage.
- Sending a crew is uneconomic or too slow for the mission cadence.
- You want scheduled, automated thermal comparisons over weeks and months.
- You need remote piloting via DJI FlightHub 2 from an operations centre.
UK considerations
Both airframes are firmly in the Specific category — most operators fly them under an OSC or PDRA-01 authorisation with a GVC-qualified remote pilot. Dock-based BVLOS is available under a CAA operational authorisation for enclosed industrial sites. See our thermal & surveying drones UK guide for the wider payload picture.
The Drone-Sales verdict
If a human will fly it, buy the Matrice 4T. If the goal is unattended, scheduled thermal missions, the Dock 3 with Matrice 4TD pays for itself in avoided crew days within a year on most enterprise sites. We handle spec, OSC support, install and training as a package — request a quote below.
